Sri Lanka: Wild to Blue

Land. Don't rush it.
Arrive at Colombo Airport, meet your driver and head south to Hikkaduwa.
There’s no sightseeing programme waiting for you today. Check in, recover from the flight and start adjusting to Sri Lanka at a considerably more reasonable speed.
Fourteen days ahead. No need to win the itinerary on Day 1.

Today the journey turns inland towards Yala.
The main event comes in the afternoon: a jeep safari in Yala National Park, one of Sri Lanka's best-known wildlife areas.
This isn't a zoo with better landscaping, so sightings are never guaranteed. That's rather the point.
Tonight, dinner is included at your accommodation.

Leave Yala behind and start climbing towards Sri Lanka's hill country.
The route includes Buduruwagala and Diyaluma Falls before reaching Ella, shifting the landscape from the drier south-east towards the greener interior.
Today is as much about the changing country outside the window as the places where you stop.

No long road transfer today.
Instead, explore around Ella with Little Adam's Peak and Nine Arch Bridge, two of the area's best-known landscapes, followed by free time to enjoy Ella at your own pace.
It's an active morning, but the rest of the day doesn't need improving with another scheduled activity.

Today the transfer becomes one of the experiences.
Board Sri Lanka's famous panoramic train from Ella to Nanu Oya, travelling through the green highlands before continuing to Nuwara Eliya and eventually Kandy. The train ticket is included.
It's a travel day, technically.
The window may disagree.

If you’re willing to sacrifice a little sleep, today can start before sunrise.
At around 6:00am, you can join the morning ceremony at Kandy’s Temple of the Tooth. It’s optional — your bed remains a perfectly valid alternative — but this is one of those occasions when the early alarm earns its place.
Arriving while the temple is coming to life for the morning ritual gives you a very different experience from simply walking through later in the day. Drums, offerings, devotees and ceremony first; breakfast afterwards.
Then we leave Kandy and head north towards Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, stopping at a spice garden along the way before visiting the cave temple complex at Dambulla.

If you’re an early riser — or willing to become one temporarily — there’s an optional start before dawn: Pidurangala for sunrise.
The climb rewards you with one of the best-known views towards Sigiriya Rock, just as the landscape begins to wake up.
Then it’s back down for breakfast before the main programme begins with Sigiriya, followed by the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and the journey east to Nilaveli.
Tonight, unpack properly. The moving part of the journey is over.

Five full days. One beach base.
After a week of moving through Sri Lanka, Nilaveli is deliberately different. There are no compulsory excursions and no daily check-out time waiting around the corner.
Swim, read, explore the coast, add an activity if you feel like it or discover that doing absolutely nothing requires surprisingly little practice.
These aren't empty days in the itinerary.
They're the reason the first week can be as full as it is.

Wake up without needing to be anywhere.
Today is another completely free day on the east coast. Stay by the beach, explore independently or decide locally whether you feel like adding something to the day.
There’s no need to decide before you get here. Sometimes the best plan depends on the weather, the sea and how ambitious you feel after breakfast.

By Day 10, the temptation to turn free time into another checklist should hopefully be fading.
Another day by the sea, with no organised programme and no reason to leave Nilaveli unless you want to.
Read. Swim. Walk. Eat. Repeat in whatever order works.

Still no compulsory programme.
If several days on the beach have done their job and you feel like exploring again, today is a good day to arrange an optional experience locally. If they haven't, the beach remains exactly where you left it.
This is the advantage of staying somewhere long enough: you can make plans because you want to, not because tomorrow you're leaving.

Your final full day by the sea.
There’s no farewell excursion and no attempt to make the last beach day more productive than the previous four. Go back to your favourite spot, order the thing you’ve discovered you like, take one last swim — or finally do the optional activity you’ve been postponing all week.
Tomorrow, the road starts again.
Today doesn't have to.

Time to leave the east coast and make your way back towards Colombo.
Today is primarily a transfer day, ending in Negombo for your final night.
It's not the most glamorous day of the itinerary. It is, however, considerably nicer than trying to cross the island and catch an international flight on the same morning.
